The other Final Fights

HAZ CLIC AQUÍ PARA LEER ESTA ENTRADA EN ESPAÑOL.

Hello everyone! After the sweet lolita witches game based on the Mega Man franchise from the last entry, in this new entry I decided to bring you again something related to Capcom, but this time is something more for “tough guys”, you know, lots of muscles, lots or martial arts, lots of punches, or what is the same, a lot of Final Fight. In fact, it is indeed kinda lot. I still remember the first time I played the original arcade, it was in a bar close to my home and the character I chose was Guy because of all that 80´s ninja thing he had in him... I still remember those huge sprites, those stages full of all kind of details, all those enemies... Ahhhh, Capcom, Capcom, Capcom, how mighty we have fallen (have we?)... Where´s that company that took by storm the arcades (and not just the arcades) of the whole world, conquering the hearts of thousands of players... Anyway, let´s leave Capcom´s recent controversial business decisions aside, and let´s focus on what we like most from them, their games, for they have and have had plenty, and some of them very good ones, in fact some are so good that have become timeless classics of the video game industry. As I was saying, in this entry I´m going to focus in some of the best fan made games based on this Capcom classic developed with the popular open source engine OpenBOR, all of them with pretty amazing results. Oh, and yeah, they are ALL FREE!!

Final Fight Alpha

Final Fight Alpha is the first of the games based on Capcom´s franchise that I wanted to talk about, and probably it´s the most “flashy” of them all. Developed by indie Italian game developer SEEP, of I which I already talked about in the entry I dedicated to their simply awesome Ryuko No Ken Nekketsu, this Italian team has decided to repeat the same formula of mixing two different franchises, in this case two of the most popular franchises of Capcom and of the golden age of arcade games, to create a really interesting and spectacular beat ´em up. Using the gameplay style of the Final Fight series and the graphic style of the Street Fighter Alpha series, Final Fight Alpha is a classic style 2D beat ´em up in which we will be able to choose from 8 different characters, 4 from the Final Fight series and another 4 from the Street Fighter series, to start beating the crap out of anything that crosses in our way. These characters will be:

Haggar                                     Cody

                                                      Maki                                         Guy

                                                    Zangief                                             Chun Li

                                                    Guile                                                 Cammy

Andore! Poison! Long time no see, guys!
As we could also see in the mix that SEEP did using the Art of Fighting and Kunio-Kun franchises, we will be able to perform some of the special attacks that these characters could perform in the games they appeared in. On top of the main characters, we will be able to find some other important characters of these two franchises that will act as bosses, such as the corrupted police officer Eddie, who´s gum we could eat after he spit it to recover some health (yeah, I know,  it sounds gross, but when you were running out of health and you had no quarters left, you just jumped over it like a lion would jump over a steak after being fed just yogurts for two weeks), the giant punk Abigail, the grenade loving psycho Rolento and the Japanese culture otaku Sodom of the Final Fight series, and the 4 classic bosses of Street Fighter 2: Balrog, Vega, Sagat and Bison, with this last one acting as the final boss of the game. We will also be able to meet again some other popular characters from these franchises such as Posion, Andore and Birdie among the normal enemies we will have to “share” our teeth breaking techniques with across the stages. Although the game surely has its mistakes, the result is quite impressive, with a special mention to the great job this Italian duo did reusing the sprites of Street Fighter Alpha to recreate the same graphic style. Just like their tribute to the SNK and Technos series, Final Fight Alpha proves once more the great talent and creativity that this talented duo of indie developers possesses, as well as serving as a great tribute to two of the biggest names of the golden era of arcade games, giving us a sample of how an “Alpha version” would have look like in the series of Haggar, Cody and Guy.

Final Fight X

Final Fight X is probably the most conservative of all these projects, keeping a very similar style to the one we could see in Capcom´s original arcade game, in fact, we could almost consider this game as the real Final Fight 2 rather than the game we saw in Super Nintendo. In Final Fight X you will be able to select one of the 3 protagonists (Haggar, Guy, Cody) that appeared in the original game to complete the several stages that compose the game, where we will fight against all the enemies we could also see in the original game. Graphics and gameplay remain exactly the same, but we will play all new stages. At a first glance it might not look as flashy as SEEP´s creation, but it´s still a very good game that the fans of the original arcade will surely enjoy.

Lovely Poison giving us a couple
of reasons to play this game...

Super Final Fight Gold Champion Edition

Final Fight Gold Champion Edition, on top of imitating perfectly Capcom´s game naming style, also uses the graphic and gameplay style of the original arcade as a base, but unlike the more conservative approach of Final Fight X, it´s creator Pierwolf added a series of substantial changes, which include:

  • Completely new stages.
  • The possibility to choose from the 7 characters that appeared in the Final Fight trilogy for Super Nintendo (Cody, Guy, Haggar, Maki, Carlos, Dean y Lucia) plus the 16 characters from Super Street Fighter 2, offering like this a total of 23 characters to choose from, each with their own special attacks.
  • On top of the Health Gauge, we will have also a Power Gauge that will allow us to perform special attacks.
  • Some of the stages will give us the possibility of selecting alternative routes.

Final Fight Apocalypse

Final Fight Apocalypse follows the style of Final Fight Gold, keeping the graphic and gameplay style of the original arcade while adding a series of changes, like the possibility of choosing any of the 3 characters that appeared in the original game, plus a forth one, Scorpion, from Capcom´s popular wrestling arcade classic Saturday Night Slam Masters, the addition again of a Power Gauge that will allow us to use special attacks, and the possibility of 4-players multiplayer matches, all these in completely new stages.

Trilogía Hyper Final Fight

Last, but not least, we have the Hyper Final Fight trilogy. These games are some kind of "mega mix" of the Final Fight trilogy we saw for Super Nintendo in which we will be able to control all the characters that appeared in that trilogy, plus some other invited guests from other popular Capcom franchises. One of the most unique features of this trilogy is that we will be able to participate in 4-players multiplayer matches, making these games ideal for some good old-school action sessions with your buddies.

As you can all see, there are all kind of versions with all kind of styles, confirming the huge impact that this Capcom classic had on all those that used to spend their quarters in the arcades of its time. If you feel like playing some good old-school beat ´em up and you are already tired of all the games you have in the popular MAME emulator, I strongly recommend you to try these games, specially since Capcom nowadays seems to be interested in making only new Monster Hunter and Resident Evil games. These games might not be perfect, but it is impossible to deny the great results, specially when you think that they are FREE games made by fans, in fact, in my humble opinion, some of these fan games are much better than some of the official Final Fight games developed by Capcom itself, such as Final Fight Revenge (Saturn, Arcade) or Final Fight Streetwise (PS2), at least in gameplay terms. Who knows, perhaps if we all keep supporting all these kind of projects, one day we might get lucky and Capcom might realize that some of their classic franchises are far from being as dead as they believe, at least for the fans, and they might decide to give another shot to this great and long forgotten genre that they once mastered so well, bringing them so many days of glory in the old times. But I guess that´s just a dream, right, Capcom?
